Group B – Greenspace Recovery and Beautification
Mission Statement of Purpose
1. Develop recommendations for greenspace recovery and beautification (including neutral grounds, parks and playgrounds) to be submitted to the Neighborhood Planning Team for their consideration as the post disaster action plan for District 5 is completed.
2. Develop and implement programs, in coordination with neighborhood groups and the volunteer coordinators of Group A, to energize and involve residents in making immediate, visible improvements to District 5 greenspaces.
3. Include existing plans (such as the City Planning Commission 2002 Open Space Plan and City Park Master Plan), coordination of efforts by other entities (RPC, CPC, BGR, NORD, etc.) and input and involvement by residents in all aspects of the Committee’s work.
Status
1. A first draft of the Overview will be completed by April 24. The detailed recommendations contained in the Appendix will be developed over the next six (6) to nine (9) months.
2. Biweekly cleanup programs are being organized by the neutral grounds subcommittee headed by Al Petrie. Outstanding assistance in this effort is being provided by Liz Krauss, a Tulane student working through the assistance of the Forest Foundation and its regional director Rachel Lazarus. The next cleanup is scheduled for April 22 and will be supported by a large group of students from other state.
3. The City Planning Commission 2002 Open Space Plan and the City Park Master Plan will be included in the final recommendations. Input has been solicited and is being received from each of the District 5 neighborhood organizations. We are working to coordinate our effort with the existing plans for playgrounds with Friends of NORD and for neutral grounds with Parkway Partners and the City’s Parkway and Parks Department. The City’s bike path plan which was approved by the City Planning Commission in 2003 will be incorporated into the District 5 Plan. The Regional Planning Commission’s current effort to Master Plan West End Park will also be incorporated into our discussions and the final District 5 recommended plan.
