First of all hang in there just a bit longer. For months your
finance committee has been engaged with Andy Kopplin's office, and
other reps from the LRA.
The main message is DON'T get caught up in the Times Picayune Q&A,
Walter Leger's comments, etc...This is a program with complexities
that go far beyond any talk show or newspaper explanation. It is
hard to hear but each individual's circumstances are different.
Just look at your personal situation and compare it to a friend or
relative down the street.
The LRA has attempted to conduct a positive PR campaign, but at the
end of the day the question we all desperately want answered, "How
much am I receiving" cannot be answered no matter how many times you
listen to Walter on the radio. Walter is selling a concept in an
effort to appease the masses. Conceptually if your $300,000 home is
over 50% damaged and you received $150,000 in insurance, FEMA,
etc...you will likely be receiving the maximum award.
Walter has been doing an admirable job of attempting to explain an
extremely technical program that is anything but simple. Don't get
caught up in the technicalities of "but I had granite countertops",
my home was worth $500,000 before the storm, etc... I would
recommend each of you go to the LRA website and read the stories of
the homeowners who have been through the pilot program.
I can assure each of you that when it is all said and done you will
be made as close to whole as is humanly possibly. This is a fair
plan, and believe me I am the last person that would ever commend
this administration.
