PROPOSED E-MAIL:
Reference: Opposition to Proposed Sale
and Re-Zoning of Fleur de Lis Park
Lakeview Subdivision
New Orleans, La.
Members of the Orleans Parish School Board:
As a citizen of New Orleans, and
Lakeview community, I want to take this
opportunity to express my opposition and
displeasure concerning the School Board's
proposed sale of Fleur de Lis Park for
development of single family homes. I fully
support the efforts of the Lakeview Civic
Improvement Association to oppose the sale
and proposed development of Fleur de Lis
Park, and to pursue whatever legal avenues
were available to the community to maintain
the property in its currently-zoned capacity
as a park.
The primary purpose of my e-mail is to
request your assistance in preserving the
integrity and presence of Fleur de Lis Park
for use by our community now and in the
future. The Park has been used and
maintained as a neighborhood park for
generations, and is the only park remaining
in the West Lakeview area. Following
Hurricane Katrina and the 17th Street canal
breach, approximately six blocks away from
the Park, the Lake Area Community and
volunteers from across the country spent
significant time and money to restore the
Park. It is a true symbol of the ongoing
recovery of our neighborhood, and our
children utilize the Park on a daily basis.
Given the zoning and current use of the
propertyas a Park, it is somewhat puzzling
that the School Board has advertised the
property for sale as Residential (Single
Family) developable property. This appears
to be a mistake.
I am writing at this time to request that
you vote to remove this property from the
School Board's list of "surplus properties"
scheduled for sale on July 29. Please grant
my community the opportunity to explore
alternate possibilities for the upkeep and
maintenance of the Park that may meet with
School Board expectations. Our community
is confident that we can work to an
acceptable agreement which would satisfy
both the needs of the School Board and the
future of our community.
I understand that School Board Members Brett
Bonin, Ira Thomas and Cynthia Cade have
already committed to removing the Park from
the current list of properties designated
for sale and development. To them I say
"Thank You". Mr. Koppel, Ms. Moran, Mr.
Bloom and Mr. Robichaux, I ask that you
seriously consider our neighborhood's
request.
LCIA is planning a community meeting on
Thursday, July 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Gulf Coast
Bank at 848 Harrison Avenue to discuss the
alternatives available to the neighborhood.
I hope you can attend. I would appreciate a
return e-mail.
Sincerely,
